REVIEW: Curse of the Man-Thing Is a Nexus of Awesome
Marvel Comics’ The Curse of the Man-Thing is a three-part story that is told over the course of three one-shots: Avengers: Curse of the Man-Thing #1, Spider-Man: Curse of the Man-Thing #1, and X-Men: Curse of the Man-Thing #1. All three of these stories were written by Steve Orlando, but each one features a different artist, with Francesco Mobili on Avengers, Alberto Foche on Spider-Man, and Andrea Broccardo on X-Men, with Guru-eFX on colors and Clayton Cowles lettering.
Three in One
One of my favorite things about the third Curse of Man-Thing story is how it tied together all three one-shots. This structure gave the story the chance to pivot from one set of heroes to another over the course of the narrative’s three acts. Plus, it means that the whole story can be sold in a single trade paperback volume, as a graphic novel.
In fact, the Man-Thing comic is uniquely suited to this packaging, as it is divided into chapters that accumulate over the course of the three issues. In other words, when you read all three of these one-shots in a single volume, it will seem like a single, chaptered story.
This is a super clever way to market the story, since it caters to those who wish to pick up each individual issue (like I did), but it also makes it simple for someone to wait until the TPB (that’s trade paperback, Marvel Blog True Believers) and read the story all in one fell swoop!
Curse of the Man-Thing
But the other reason you’ll want to read the story is that Man-Thing is one of the best characters in the whole Marvel Universe! This weird character has a strange origin, and he’s tied to some of the best characters in Marvel Comics (like Howard the Duck and She-Hulk).
Did you get a chance to pick up these three one-shots, or will you be picking up the TPB collection when it is released on August 10th, 2021? Let us know what you think in the comment section, Marvel Blog True Believers!
