LOKI 503: Little Golden Book LOKI
Welcome back to Loki Academy, Marvel Blog Untrue Believers!
Today’s required reading may look a little different than the books you’re used to reading about here on Marvel Blog, but it’s important to note that even when they look a little different, a Loki Variant is still a Loki! Case in point: the Loki Little Golden Book, written by Arie Kaplan, with illustrations by Hollie Mengert!
Loki Little Golden Book
This Little Golden Book is an official tie-in to the ongoing Marvel Studios’ Loki series on Disney+, and it was published on January 5th, 2021.
It follows Thor and Loki on an adventure that begins in Asgard… and just may involve a dragon!
This book is 24 pages long and is perfect for ages 2 through 5 (that’s right, Marvel Blog Untrue Believers – let’s make sure that we get a Loki Variant for every reader).
All About Loki Little Golden Book
If you want to learn more about the Loki Little Golden Book, you should head over to Kaplan’s website!
He has posted a blog post that reveals five things you may not know about the book, including the fact that in his original manuscript, Loki distracted a guard using an illusion that made it seem like a sandwich had come to life… with a face and all (a level up of the God of Mischief’s skills since Loki: Where Mischief Lies by Mackenzi Lee, during which he still hasn’t gotten the hang of such power).
Kaplan’s article will also give you all kinds of insight into what went into writing the Loki Little Golden Book!
Today for some reason I feel compelled to remind everyone that I wrote the #Loki Little Golden Book. Kaplan has tons of relevant experience, and really thought about what would make an exciting and informative book for a young reader. For one thing, he has written other Little Golden Books, including the tie-ins for Jurassic Park, like Mr. DNA’s Book of Dinosaurs, and other Marvel tie-ins, like the Doctor Strange Little Golden Book.
Plus, Kaplan knows his comics: he’s also the author of From Krakow to Krypton: Jews and Comic Books, a book on how Jewish culture affected American comics, a fantastically insightful read that I cannot recommend enough (although as you might imagine, this one’s for older readers than the Loki Little Golden Book)!
Meanwhile, Loki Little Golden Book illustrator Mengert has plenty of relevant experience, as well! As you can see on her website, she has illustrated books like the DC Super Hero Girls: Winner Takes All.
She also illustrated a book called Unicorn (And Horse), which is perfect because the Loki of the Marvel Universe has a personal history of transforming into a unicorn (see: Loki: Agent of Axis #8 by Al Ewing, Lee Garbett, Nolan Woodard, and Clayton Cowles).
If you visit Mengert’s website, you can see some high-quality images of her illustrations for the Loki Little Golden Book!
