REVIEW: We Used To Be Friends in 4-LOM & ZUCKUSS #1
In 4-Lom & Zuckuss #1, “Zuckuss Must Die!” by Daniel José Older, Kei Zama, Felipe Sobreiro, and Ariana Maher, with a main cover by Mahmud Asrar and Matthew Wilson, we get to see what happened to the team of 4-Lom and Zuckuss after their appearance in War of the Bounty Hunters #1!
But before their appearance in this week’s Bounty Hunters #15! That’s right, Marvel Blog True Believers, this one-shot bridges the narrative gap between those two issues in an interesting and surprisingly emotional way!
4-Lom & Zuckuss
One of the most wizard things about 4-Lom & Zuckuss #1 is the fact that almost no human characters appear!
While there is one human who has a line or two, this issue is mostly aliens and droids, with no Jedi to be found. And while not everyone may agree with me, it takes place in one of my favorite corners of the Star Wars galaxy, the one with very few Jedi.
The other thing I really enjoyed about this issue is its careful structure: much of the first act is filled with single pages that jump from one narrative thread to another.
And I must shout out the little images that appeared to denote which character is speaking as they were telling a story. These pictures changed with each dialogue box, so you could see the subtle differences in Zuckuss’s facial expressions as he told his tale – yes, trust me, you will definitely be able to read emotions on Zuckuss’s face by the end of this issue.
But perhaps the best element of the whole issue was the emotional thread that ties 4-Lom & Zuckuss to one another, and to see these two friends and allies at odds with one another is just a little bit heartrending. Will they be able to work it out by the conclusion of the War of the Bounty Hunters? I sure hope so, Marvel Blog True Believers!
