Free Guy Spoilers Reveal Marvelous Crossover
Spoiler alert, Marvel Blog True Believers! This one isn’t technically about a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, but if you want to fully avoid any kind of spoilers, now is the time to use your “Level Restart” option to get out of here and return to the game’s main menu!
OK, now that that’s out of the way: Free Guy has references to the Marvel Cinematic Universe not only in its promotional material, but in the movie itself!
Free Guy
Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds, who may be better known to readers of Marvel Blog as none other than Wade Wilson, the Merc with the Mouth (that’s how you know we’re not talking about 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine).
In addition to Reynolds, Taika Waititi, perhaps best known to readers of Marvel Blog as either “Korg” or “that dude who makes good Thor movies,” also appears in Free Guy… and no, unfortunately, it was just the awesome promotional material that saw THIS MCU reference in the rock-in-blood.
However, that’s not the only Marvel crossover the movie has in store.
In fact, at the climax of the story, as Guy attempts to fight the final boss, he pulls out several weapons from the Disney toy chest, including a Hulk fist and a lightsaber. And then… Captain America’s shield – followed by the actor who plays Steve Rogers himself, Chris Evans, making an appearance!
How Did It Happen?
This one isn’t as complicated as it might first seem, Marvel Blog True Believers! While Free Guy was initially a Fox movie, the acquisition of Fox Studios by The Walt Disney Company (it was not a merger, as inaccurately reported by Entertainment Tonight, and the concepts aren’t completely interchangeable) took place.
Director Shawn Levy revealed that, thanks to the fact that Disney now owned the studio, they only had to ask the Powers That Be if the Marvelous artifacts could be included.
In Theaters Now
Hey, too bad Guy couldn’t get his hands on the Ten Rings, or this whole Free Guy movie could have been finished a lot sooner!
