CALL ME, BEEP ME: Nick Fury + Captain Marvel = BFF 4EVER
Everyone knows that one of the best part of the Marvel Universe is the team-ups! Whether it’s Black Widow & Hawkeye, Captain America & the Winter Soldier, or Wanda & Vision, there’s something special about taking two superheroes and putting them together! Today, we’re going to be paying homage to one of our favorite team-ups delivered by the MCU so far: Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Captain Marvel (most often Brie Larson)!
Captain Marvel: Call me, beep me…
In the Sacred Timeline of the MCU, the first hint we got as to the relationship between Fury and Carol Danvers was in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. After the Avengers assembled (but didn’t manage to defeat Thanos), half the world was disintegrated thanks to the Snap of Thanos (Josh Brolin).
However, as he was turned to dust, Fury pulled a pager out of his jacket and activated it, and it immediately began to broadcast a signal, one that featured the symbol of Captain Marvel.
Then, we discovered how he obtained the pager in 2019’s Captain Marvel.
In the 1990s, Fury met Danvers and became acquainted with her extreme power. After the duo teamed-up for the first time, successfully obtaining an Infinity Stone in the process, Fury had gained so much respect for Danvers that he was inspired to create the Avengers Initiative (he even took the name “Avengers” from the call sign Danvers had when she was in the United States Air Force).
In 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, we saw how Danvers answered the call of Fury’s pager, returning to Earth and helping the surviving Avengers keep the universe together in their darkest hour.
And now, in this week’s episode of What If…?, we saw that Fury would have been prepared to activate the pager at any time had the Avengers not assembled. When the founding Avengers are murdered, he activates the pager, summoning Danvers (voiced by Alexandra Daniels on What If…?) to help rebuff the Asgardian invasion headed by Loki!
Nick Fury: If you want to reach me…
If you had a pager to call Captain Marvel, how often would you use it? I’ll admit it, Marvel Blog True Believers: I would not exercise the level of restraint shown by Fury! Let us know what you think in the comment section.
