If you haven’t had a chance to see the penultimate episode of What If…? on Disney+ and you want to avoid spoilers, then open up a gateway to another dimension and leave this article right now!
What If… The Watcher Broke His Oath?
We all know the function of Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) – heck, it’s right there in his name! The guy is supposed to watch (and only watch), a point that is driven home in his speech each week in the opening sequence of the animated anthology series. Maybe we should start calling him “Mr. Rear Window”?
But in the penultimate episode of the season, things got a little weird! When Infinity Ultron (played by the villainous voice actor Ross Marquand) managed to pierce the veil between dimensions and spot The Watcher behind his prismatic curtain, Uatu suddenly found himself on the receiving end of a Kirby-esque robotic punch (learn all about the Kirby Krackle from the Kirby Museum by checking out this link)!
This is a lot like the plot of the comic Exiles, which sees The Watcher assembling a team out of the sole survivors of various multiverses (it’s kinda messed up here too, Mr. Rear Window waits until right before the hero’s moment of death to yank them from their plane of existence to his). In fact, the most recent run of this Marvel Comics series, which began in 2018, even featured the comic book introduction of Captain Carter!
At the conclusion of the penultimate episode of this season of What If…?, The Watcher has finally given in, and returned to Strange Supreme (Benedict Cumberbatch, quickly becoming one of my favorite voice actors)! From here, will we see The Watcher assemble a team of Exiles that includes members like Captain Carter, Party Thor, and T’Star-Lord?
We should be so lucky, Marvel Blog True Believers! And hear me out, by introducing the Exiles for What If…? season two, we’d have an excellent team of detectives onboard for The Watcher’s death in season three (for a series of episodes based on the Original Sin event)!
What If What If What If
The clip released by the official Marvel Entertainment Twitter account doesn’t show much of what we can expect when the season finale airs tomorrow, other than a shattering TVA screen, but it’s still a very intriguing teaser!
What do you expect will transpire when the episode is released for streaming? We want to hear from you! Let us know in the comment section.
