REVIEW: A Cold, Dark World in Darkhold: Blade #1
In Darkhold: Blade #1 by Daniel Kibblesmith, Federico Sabbatini, Rico Renzi, and Clayton Cowles, with a main cover by Juan Ferreyra, the most recent tie-in in the ongoing Darkhold event, we get a story that opens up a window to an alternate Marvel universe that’s very bleak, indeed!
Darkhold: Blade #1
In this issue, like Darkhold: Iron Man #1, we get a non-canonical story that recasts our favorite Marvel superheroes in far more horrific roles! For Iron Man, that meant an origin story that saw him literally liquifying inside his armor.
However, for Blade, we get a whole new timeline. As we’re introduced to a world that is overfilled with Vampires thanks to some spooky happenings in the past, the mood is perfectly set by the art for this issue. Featuring some arresting colors and some very cool character designs, this comic immediately lets you know that you’re looking at a world that is very different from the normal Marvel Universe.
Over the course of the story, we get to see many of the big names in the Marvel Comics world, but they have been dramatically recast to fit into this nightmarish parallel timeline. One example is Kingpin, who gets a body-horror makeover that will probably make you think of certain episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
At the conclusion of the story, there is a neat, bleak twist that will drive home the fact that this timeline is not one you’d want to visit in person.
Brave New World, That Has Such Vampires In It
This event is shaping up to be a fun “meta anthology” featuring your favorite Marvel superheroes recast as tragic characters in horrific tales. Have you had a chance to pick up the issues that have been released so far? What did you think of them?
