DISNEY+ DAY: Watch Out, Uncle Ben – Spider-Man: Freshman Year Announced
Today, Friday, November 12th, 2021, is Disney+ Day, a celebration of the anniversary of the first two years of Disney+, the streaming home of Marvel Studios! To mark the occasion, a whole bunch of new titles have been announced (along with plenty of other material, like series logos, being revealed). But there’s one announcement that will have viewers of all ages swinging over to their TV sets: there’s a new Spider-Man animated series on the way: Spider-Man: Freshman Year.
Spider-Man: Freshman Year
In an article on the official Marvel website, some more details about this upcoming series were announced.
For example, Jeff Trammell, the executive producer for the series, will also be writing the script. Trammell’s previous work includes Craig of the Creek, an extremely popular animated series on Cartoon Network.
Furthermore, as suggested by the logo, this series will follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s incarnation of Peter Parker (played by Tom Holland in the live-action movies) as the works his way towards claiming the mantle of Spider-Man.
Does this mean that we might end up seeing the death of Uncle Ben in the animated series? The movies managed to avoid this sad scene by just assuming that viewers already knew Spidey’s origin and rolling with it, a strategy that worked pretty well. And while an Uncle Ben death scene seems pretty heavy for a cartoon, it’s far from unprecedented (just ask Batman if you don’t want to ask Peter).
According to the article on Marvel’s website, Spider-Man: Freshman Year will celebrate the early comic book roots of Spider-Man. Let’s hope this means we get plenty of Steve Ditko-inspired supervillains, Marvel Blog True Believers! And maybe the MCU’s version of Gwen Stacy?
