Bringing Xmas to the MCU’s NYC
In a post made to the official Marvel website on Wednesday, November 24th, 2021, several of the creative control brains behind Hawkeye, the currently ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+, came together to share what went into integrating as much of the Xmas season as possible into each of the show’s six episodes!
The Most Hawkeye Time of the Year
As anyone who has had the chance to watch the first two episodes of Hawkeye, currently available for streaming on Disney+, will be aware, the show highlights the fact that it’s the Christmas season in New York City. With only six days till Xmas arrives, Clint must solve his street-level problems in the Big Apple so he can get home in time for Xmas.
“[O]ur tonal touch points were more [of the comics run by Matt] Fraction [and Marvelously integral artist David Aja], more Christmas,” said Marvel Studios Head-Boss-In-Charge Kevin Feige.
And according to Hawkeye head writer Jonathan Igla, the Xmas tone was baked-in from the start.
“I definitely had Christmas songs playing when I was doing a lot of the writing and I had certain [holiday aspects] in my head,” noted Igla.
Meanwhile, director Rhys Thomas said that while he sometimes thought that they had reached maximum Yule, Feige would simply encourage more.
“I’d be the one saying, ‘I think we got enough,’ and [I’d be told] no, just throw in more,” stated Thomas when asked about the series by Marvel.com.
Executive producer Trinh Tran confirmed this statement.
“When you actually tell me there is too much Christmas, that’s when I know to pull back,” said Tran. “And he never said a word in terms of that.”
