RETRO REVIEW: Kate Needs Cash in Hawkeye (2012) #14
In Hawkeye (2012) #14 by Matt Fraction, Annie Wu, Matt Hollingsworth, and Chris Eliopoulos, with a hex-tacular main cover by David Aja, we get to see what happens next after Kate Bishop has moved to Southern California (with Pizza Dog in tow). Just what is it that happens next? Well, as so many of us who have gone west soon discover… She needs more cash!

As you may have noticed, this issue marks the return of Wu on the interiors for Hawkeye. She previously contributed a few “romance comics covers” for the eighth issue of the 2012 series.

Now, she returns for four whole issues… in other words, the majority of Kate’s time in Southern California (in this series, anyway) is depicted through the art of Wu!
In this issue, Kate learns that she needs cash. We saw in the Hawkeye Annual that she was done taking money from her rich father… but that means that she needs to find an alternate source of cash, and cat sitting is only earning her so much moolah.

One of my favorite moments was when Kate used the name “Hero for Hire” for her attempt to earn cash by selling her hero-ing services. As a huge fan of Heroes for Hire, this got a solid chuckle from me.
I also enjoyed Kate’s misguided attempts at figuring out how to be a private detective in California.

And, as someone with a very picky feline at home, I also appreciated how motivated Kate was in finding the right cat food… even if the guy coming up to her while she’s shopping in the middle of an investigation should have been a dead giveaway for her that something odd was afoot!

I just have one question after this reading this issue, Marvel Blog True Believers: when do we get a Hawkeye Investigations office at Avengers Campus? Kate belongs on the Best Coast!
