REVIEW: Spoiled Eden in Captain America/Iron Man #1
In Captain America/Iron Man #1 by Derek Landy, Angel Unzueta, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Joe Caramagna, with a main cover by Alex Ross, we get a team-up between two of the most legendary Avengers of all time… and they’re facing off against Veronica Eden!
Captain America/Iron Man #1
Captain America/Iron Man #1 opens with a flashback to Tony Stark’s partying days (and I’m sure the most devoted of Marvel Blog True Believers know that’s one of my favorite parts of the characters backstory) before flashing forward to the present day.
This issue relies on lots of continuity, and I must confess that I was not familiar with the main antagonist, Eden (although according to a note from editor Alanna Smith, she played a role in Falcon & The Winter Soldier #1 – 5. Fortunately, Eden, who narrates the issue, is interesting enough that I just might have to look those issues up on Marvel Unlimited to learn more about the character before Captain America/Iron Man #2 arrives.
Speaking of the decision to make Eden the narrator, I appreciated the way that decision gave the opportunity to keep Cap and Iron Man in the dark as to what Eden’s plan is: to make the world a better place by killing off superheroes. She’s executing these plans using the assistance of a former member of the Fifty State Initiative – again, something from Marvel Comics continuity with which I am not really familiar…
However, so long as the reader has a familiarity with Cap and Iron Man, who act according to their respective established characters throughout the issue, they will have a handle with which to navigate this inaugural issue.
