A Strange Ditko
If you visit Mignola’s Twitter timeline, you can see that the Strange Ditko is the second piece completed by the artist in 2022. As he explained in a Tweet on January 2nd, “Every few years I take a stab at drawing that crazy Steve Ditko stuff and never manage to pull it off. So now time to try again–” Mignola included the pencil draft with the message.
The next day, Mignola Tweeted a follow-up image with more detailed pencils, saying, “Good, bad or otherwise, time to put ink on this thing and see what happens.”
Then, on the fourth, he Tweeted the completed art:
Doctor Strange first appeared in a story in Strange Tales (1963) #110, “Dr. Strange: Master of Black Magic” by Ditko, Stan Lee, and Terry Szenics.
Meanwhile, Mignola is best known for creating the Hellboy universe for Dark Horse Comics, including the eponymous hero and several spinoff titles, like B.P.R.D. and Abe Sapien. In spite of the fact that he stated otherwise as he worked on the Strange Ditko artwork, his distinctive, inky style aesthetic pairs well with the Sorcerer Supreme!
Marvelous Fanart
There’s few things better than seeing incredibly talented and established artists creating fanart of their favorite Marvel characters, and Mignola’s Strange Ditko homage is certainly no exception.
