REVIEW: Miles Arrives in Spider-Man #81.BEY
In Spider-Man #81.BEY by Saladin Ahmed, Carlos Gómez, Bryan Valenza, and Joe Caramagna, with a main cover by Arthur Adams and Romulo Fajardo Jr., we get to find out what happens when the Beyond Corporation-backed Spider-Man runs into the unauthorized Spider-Man of Brooklyn, Miles Morales!
Spider-Man #81.BEY feat. Miles
One of my favorite parts of this issue is when Spidey elects to use his suit’s flying jet powers in order to avoid taking the bridge over the East River as he heads to Bed-Stuy. I loved this part, not only because I am a sucker for real-world locales being featured in the panels of Marvel Comics, but also because the story calls to mind the fact that in order to accomplish this, Ben’s burning “more fuel than a luxury jet.” Zam!
Plus, once Miles shows up, this issue kicks into high gear. I loved the reference to Spider-Man’s clone-filled history in particular.
I also really, really liked the panel that had two onlookers wondering why the pair of Spider-Men were fighting. They’re supposed to be teaming-up into some kind of Spider-Verse, aren’t they?
In addition, I thought the villain of this issue, Rhizome, was great. He calls himself the “ruin-maker” and wants to destroy houses as he shouts about he wants to eradicate steel and brick. As someone who lives in a brick house, I thought this was terrifying. Please save us from Rhizome, Spider-Mans!
