REVIEW: Arms Off in Doctor Aphra #17
In Doctor Aphra #17 by Alyssa Wong, Minkyu Jung, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Joe Caramagna, with a main cover by Sara Pichelli & Nolan Woodard, we get a story that reveals a piece of Ascendant tech that can turn dismembered arms into hovering weapons! And that’s just the tip of the comet, Marvel Blog True Believers!
Doctor Aphra #17
First of all, let’s get this out of the way: this is an excellent issue of Doctor Aphra that includes all of the best aspects of a great Aphra story!
After a brief introduction concerning the activities of the Tagge Corporation, we catch up with Sana Starros and Doctor Aphra as they attempt to meet up with a contact… but it turns out the contact has already been killed by one of Aphra’s old acquaintances.
There is no one who Aphra has met who she hasn’t pissed off, and Kho is no exception! But what I really liked about them is how interesting their backstory was. While they are an archeologist like Aphra, they are more interested in the Force-related aspects of the tech they find than Aphra, who only cares about the credits. However, Kho makes a compelling case for their perspective when they levitate the seven arms they’ve cut off for their ritual.
While I tend to agree with Aphra – “the Force doesn’t keep people fed” – I did enjoy this antagonist. It looks like we’ll be seeing more of them as the story progresses, so that’s something to look forward to. And if they keep stealing arms like this, everybody in the Star Wars galaxy is going to have to get robotic replacement limbs… Luke’s “hand guy” is going to be busy!
