Ethan Hawke Talks Comic Book Films, Oscar Isaac, and Why the MCU is the New Hamlet
A recent interview saw the newest Marvel Villain of the studio’s latest Disney+ series discuss joining the lauded universe as Ethan Hawke talks comic book films, Oscar Isaac, and why the MCU is the new Hamlet.
One of the most obscure characters in Marvel comics lore, Marc Spector, has been an enigmatic presence to many comic book fans who have delved deep into the character’s long history in the medium.
Not heralded as one of the genre’s cult classics, Moon Knight occupies a space solely unto himself, one that explores themes of mental illness, vigilantism, and Egyptian Deity.
Yet, the MCU has looked to the character in their most ambitious phase, as Marvel’s Phase Four has brought out the most creative and explorative sides of the source material, with Marc Spector undoubtedly being on the top of the list.
Starring the brilliant Oscar Isaac, the series felt primed to be incredibly unique, and when fans met news of Ethan Hawke’s casting, that uniqueness felt partnered with even greater expectation.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the veteran actor set to portray the villain of the series, Arthur Harrow, sat down to discuss it, as Ethan Hawke talks about comic book films, Oscar Isaac, and why the MCU is the new Hamlet.
Speaking of his lack of history in the world of comic book adaptations, Hawke discussed his hesitation, stating,
“The comic book world meant a lot to me when I was younger… I was always a little apprehensive; there’s a certain kind of actor that really excels in that universe, and I’m still not sure if I’m one of them. But then Oscar asked me, and I really respect him. and I knew that if he went in, he was going to go all-in,”
Hawke continued, “Mohamed Diab, I really like his films; he’s a special director. So it just became about the project, and it wants an intellectual decision at all; it was like, ‘Oh, let’s do something cool with these guys.”
Hawke also expressed his growing love for the character and his controversial opinion on why the MCU has become this generation’s Hamlet.
Hawke stated, “The more I learned about the Moon Knight, the more turned on I got because it’s so much better than trying to create something that the audience already has a big agenda with.”
“Like, if you do Batman or Superman or Hulk, any of these famous ones, the fans have so many preconceived things they want from it. It’s like playing Hamlet. Ninety percent of people there have an opinion about how Hamlet should be played.”
Hawke concluded, “With Moon Knight, we get to create a world and a character.”
As Ethan Hawke Talks comic book films, Oscar Isaac, and why the MCU is the new Hamlet, we cant wait to see the actor bring his incredible talent to ta genuinely unique world that Moon Knight is prepared to forge as Marvel’s latest and most ambitious, Disney+ series yet.
