‘Eternals’ Makkari has Quickly Become Cinema’s Greatest Speedster
A divisive response didn’t stop Marvel’s latest Dsiney+ debut to feature ten of the MCU’s most unique creations, and in Eternals Makkari, cinema’s greatest speedster.
Eternals is an MCU film that stands alone at this point; sporting some of the worst reviews to be granted to an MCU film in its decade belong existence, it is quite unlike anything else.
It isn’t simply its response that has the film standing alone, however, as it is seemingly unique by design; with the film’s director, Chloe Zhao, crafting a narrative that relies on a visual style quite unlike anything the MCU had orchestrated in the past.
Breaking the Marvel mold seemed to be firmly on the agenda for the Studio entering the lauded Phase Four, as Eternals was just another domino that is slowly redefining the very state of the Marvel cinematic universe as we know it.
Yet, in that pursuit, and in the unique visual style for which Eternals employs, they have crafted. the character that utilizes some of the coolest special effects in modern filmmaking.
Despite the competition, Eternals Makkari is cinema’s greatest speedster.
The superpower of Superspeed isn’t anything new to the world of comic books or comic book adaptations, but like with anything derived from the medium, there have been some hits and misses as far as how that superpower is employed big screen.
The iconic DC character known for his speed- in most recent depictions- is shown in slow motion; a choice that is understandable when you consider asking the audience to observe a character moving faster than their eyes can capture.
Yet, with Chloe Zhao’s directing choices with Makkari, she executed the adaptation of super speed that is among the best ever.
With Makkar, you can truly see the impact of her speed; when the character goes head to head with Ikaris, the viewer is blown away by the sheer magnificence of witnessing something move so quickly, while also utilizing that movement to pack quite the punch.
Makkari, although one of the most magnificent depictions of a superpower, also is a fascinating character; someone who moves so fast yet is so committed and intrigued by the preservation of history she often comes across as a hoarder.
She is almost too fast, and her desire to collect objects is almost her inner need to accumulate tokens that signify that time that she loses by simply existing in a state for which perception is on a continuous plane of movement.
The execution of her powers, and the fascinating choices that Chloe Zhao made in the development of her as a character, all prove one thing.
Eternals MAkkari is cinemas’ greatest speedster, and hopefully, this is just the start for her in the MCU.
