‘Morbius’ Director Explains Why The Title Character Isn’t A Villain
A complicated character, to say the least, the upcoming film will explore Jared Leto’s performance as the title character; But the Morbius director recently explained why he isn’t the film’s villain.
One of Marvel’s more obscure Spider-Man villains, Morbius the living vampire has been a character that is equal parts sympathetic and menacing.
A former doctor seeking a cure to a seemingly incurable disease, Morbius eventually transforms himself into a vampiric creature; feasting on blood to survive.
The film will star Jared Leto as the eponymous character, with a narrative that finds incredible intrigue in the dichotomy between Morbius’ desire to save and protect people, and his newfound craving for the thing they need to stay alive.
Morbius, by all accounts, was defined to be a villain- after all, a vampire who gives into his blood-thirsty urges must be-but Daniel Espinosa thinks otherwise.
Espinosa is the Morbius director who doesn’t believe the title character is truly the villain of the story.
CBR reported a statement made by Espinosa on behalf of Sony Pictures, in which he explains why Morbius isn’t the villain of his story.
Espinosa states, “Morbius is searching for goodness– the cure for a disease. He’s going to find it, disregarding the cost to himself or to society. And in his search for goodness, he transforms into something he detests.”
“He has to accept the ugliness he has within him,” Espinosa continues, “and that others something beautiful about it. It will be his strength, what makes him unique.”
Espinosa continues “Michael Morbius is one of the most altruistic characters of the Marvel Universe. He’s one of the few that really believes in good. This good man has a horrible disease, and in his trials to save himself and the people that he cares for, he turns into a monster.”
The director concludes his statement by noting, “To become the hero, he has to accept his fate: Morbius’s journey is to accept that he will still remain the person that he is, but he has to harnesses these powers.”
Morbius will hit theaters on April 1st, and we can not wait to see how Leto and Espinosa craft such an interesting and conflicting character.
