MCU Star Benedict Wong Has an Idea for Phase Four’s New Name
First debuting in Doctor Strange, MCU star Benedict Wong has the perfect idea for the official title of Marvel’s Phase Four.
There are few Marvel characters that have seen the vitality of their character exponentially increase in the way that Benedict Wong’s character has.
Phase Four has seen the official appointment of the Marvel sorcerer to the title of Sorcerer Supreme, while it has given the character a brand new level of importance in regards to the overarching Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The character was perceived as a side character, with a strong friendship with Doctor Strange that made him a fixture in the character’s own franchise.
Yet, he has only gotten more responsibility from Marvel writers since the events of The Snap in Avengers: Infinity War dwindled the population in the universe to half.
Inheriting the Nick Fury kind of role, Wong has been a force that has kept the superpowered community on earth in check; something we saw firsthand in the 2021 debut of Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings.
The importance of his role was expounded upon in Spider-Man: No Way Home, when Doctor Strange affirmed that it was wong who was the new head of the Sanctum, and the official Sorcerer Supreme of the MCU.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness should only accentuate the characters growing importance, which is a fact that prompted the man behind the character, Benedict Wong, to come up with the perfect name for Marvel’s Phase Four.
In a new interview with Empire Magazine- as reported by ComicBook.com– Wong referenced Phase Four by stating, “I call it Phase Wong. It’s a nice, interesting shift, Wong has taken on a new role, and that dynamic changes between them [Wong and Strange] both.”
The name kind of fits perfectly, especially considering how much the creative voices behind Marvel Studios adore the character; with Shang-Chi producer Jonathan Schwartz stating, “I think we all just got excited about the idea of Wong. People love Wong. We love Wong.”
We cannot wait to see what’s in store for Wong’s character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness just two months away!
