Before Joining ‘Moon Knight’ Ethan Hawke Went to ‘Doctor Strange’ Director for Advice on the MCU
There was a lot of excitement when one of the world’s best actors signed on to perform opposite Oscar Isaac, and it turns out that he went to a trusted source before making his decision, as Ethan Hawke went to Doctor Strange director Scott Derickson for some MCU advice.
Moon Knight stands as one of Marvel’s most ambitious, and narratively interesting, projects to date; with its intrigue resting on its dense subject matter, and willingness to lean into the brutality and maturity of the Marc Spector character.
Oscar Isaac was one of the first announcements for the sires, as he signed on to play its eponymous character; yet, it was equally as impressive when the team behind the series announced that legendary performer Ethan Hawke would be acting as the antagonist to Isaacs’ Spector.
Hawke is basically iconic in the acting world, with his commitment to the craft and dedication to producing story-based films that truly present the best of the genre-defining his three-decade-long career in the business.
With all of that in mind, it was fairly surprising to see him step out into the world of Studio productions and venture into the vast and gargantuan Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In a recent report from ComicBook.com, it appears as though the veteran actor was a bit trepidatious about entering this uncharted territory, as Ethan Hawke went to Doctor Strange director Scott Derickson for some advice on the MCU.
“You know, Scott was one of the first people I called up when I was thinking about taking this job,” Hawke noted, “about what was his experience like, and he was so complimentary.”
Hawke continued, “And so, he basically credits Kevin Feige with being the only artist to ever run a studio, that he really thins more the way artists do than the way your conventional studio executive does.”
That is perhaps the most glowing compliment one could give a studio executive, and what makes it all the more complimentary is that Derrickson left the MCU due to creative differences prior to the development of the Doctor Strange sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
For Derrickson to have ended his collaboration with the MCU to still hold Marvel Studios- and MCU architect Kevin Feige- in such high regard is telling of the environment that was crafted by the studio.
