‘Morbius’ Tops Box Office with $39 Million Opening Weekend
It seems as though Sony’s newest installment of their film universe of Spider-Man characters has persevered despite overwhelmingly negative reviews, as Morbius tops the box office with a $39 million opening weekend.
There was plenty of skepticism on the eventual financial success of Sony’s latest Spider-Man-related film adventure, with Morbius arriving this past weekend.
The film chronicles the origin story of the Marvel anti-hero, played by Jared Leto, as Michael Morbius attempt to find a cure for an incurable disease, eventually leading to his transformation into a monstrous, vampiric, entity.
Arriving after the record-breaking success that was Spider-Man: No Way Home, Morbius was seeking to capitalize on the Spider-Man fandom that is bigger now than its ever been.
With estimates projecting the film to be a success early in its theatrical run, it seems as though many have been accurate, as Morbius tops the weekend box office with a $39 million opening weekend.
Reports of its initial financial implications were reported by ComicBook.com, with the early return on the film keeping it relatively on track to potentially break even; as the film sports a $75 million dollar budget before marketing.
The biggest question facing Morbius was whether or not the film could financially survive the near onslaught of negative reviews that have arrived since its debut in cinemas.
Critics- to a person- have stated that the film underwhelms at the very least, with many perceiving the film to be a horrendous turn for a studio that had the entire planet clamoring for more Spider-Man after the Marvel collaborated Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The film has a long way to go before approaching what Spider-Man: No Way Home was able to achieve at the domestic box office, and at this point, it should be safe to assume it won’t be among the top financial performers of the year.
