Marvel Reportedly Vetoed Sylvie’s Backstory in ‘Loki’ Episode
What is one of Marvel’s best Disney+ series almost looked a lot different as Marvel reportedly vetoed exploring Sylvie’s backstory in a Loki episode that the writers had pitched?
There is very little doubt that Loki stands as one of the great Marvel projects of the latest Phase Four, as it is an amalgamation of a lot of what has made this Phase one of the MCU’s best.
It was the primary introductory project that first opened the doors of the multiverse in a real tangible way; WandaVision operated primarily by exploring a reality that Wanda created for herself, whereas Loki took fans into a world in which destroying alternate timelines was necessary.
Tom Hiddleston’s Loki has long been one of Marvel’s most interesting characters, and his eponymous series was the perfect avenue to explore more of what has so endeared him to fans; while also exploring the variants of himself that perfectly embody what makes him such a compelling villain.
One of the more interesting parts of the series is his relationship with one variant, in particular, a female variant who was plucked from her timeline as a child.
The two characters work together throughout the series to end the TVA, but what is interesting is that we now know that Marvel reportedly vetoed Sylvie’s backstory in a Loki episode that was already outlined by the series writers.
As reported by CBR.com, Loki writer Eric Martin was asked on Twitter if there were any “memorable notes/ mandates/ curveballs from the higher-ups.”
Martin replied by revealing, “We outlined a very different episode two that showed much more of what Sylvie did on the timeline, but they wanted us to stick with Loki”
It is interesting, although not all that surprising, that Marvel wanted to limit how much time the creative team spent exploring Sylvie in the series; with the emphasis being placed on the title character of the show, and the character who fans had adored since his 2012 MCU Debut.
Although, it is still very interesting to consider just how things would’ve been different had the character been explored more thoroughly within the series; and how that could have informed how fans understood Sylvie as the final events unfolded.
