‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Dominates With $185 Million Opening
A film that was easily projected to be the biggest theatrical debut of 2022 has more than lived up to its billing, as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness dominates with a $185 million opening.
There were few films of the pandemic era that could share the same fanfare and expectation that was bestowed upon the latest MCU entry.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was set to be one of the biggest Marvel debuts of all time, following in the footsteps of the record-breaking Spider-Man: No Way Home, and putting a cap on the Multiversal narrative that has been a focal point of the MCU’s phase four.
With Marvel’s resident sorcerer facing off against the boundless potential present within the endless alternate realities that exist, audiences were primed to be blown away by the sheer imagination and magnitude of the Doctor Strange sequel; and that excitement has paid off for Marvel’s newest film.
According to a recent report by Collider, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has dominated the early summer market with a $185 million opening; a number that makes the Sam Raimi vehicle the eleventh-biggest opening weekend in domestic box office history.
The film’s incredible preview numbers led many to believe it had the potential to surpass the $200 million mark in its opening weekend; and although it couldn’t reach that massive number, it was able to still reach some of the higher-end predictions prior to the week.
To put the incredible number into context, 2016s Doctor Strange ended its entire domestic box office theatrical run with $232 million; a number that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness should easily exceed in its 45-day theatrical release slate.
When compared to other MCU films of the pandemic era, the Doctor Strange sequel has outgrossed their opening weekend earnings on its first day; with Black Widow earning $80 million, Shang- Chi earning $75 million, and Eternals earning $71 million in their opening weekends respectively.
It will be interesting to see where the story goes from here, as Doctor Strange 2 should continue to dominate the summer box office.
