MarvelBlog REVIEW: Dark Ages #4
The ongoing series has proven to be one of the most interesting and creative, as we bring you this MarvelBlog Review of Dark Ages #4
There is something tremendously creative about the work that both Tom Taylor and Iban Coello have continued to develop in this latest iteration of the Dark Ages series, with the fourth issue taking readers onto the seas.
A comic run that reimagines everything that you think you know about your favorite Marvel heroes, Dark Ages puts these characters on a planet with no electricity, and it forces them to confront forces lobbying for control on a dystopian Earth.
Dark Ages #4 starts off with Nightcrawler as a ship captain, sailing the seas with iconic characters like Colossus helping his ship run smoothly.
You find out, shortly into the comic, that Storm has taken up the massive responsibility of guiding the ship; with her power to control the weather setting its course and moving it along.
The interesting aspect of what Taylor does in this issue is he develops the stakes for nearly every character, and that is quickly uncovered in this latest issue.
The first three installments of this newest run have already introduced readers to May Parker, Peter, and Mary Janes’ daughter; and do a similar thing in introducing the daughter of T’Challa and Storm.
It doesn’t feel overplayed in this issue, it feels intentional; as if Taylor is building a narrative in which the next generation of heroes is being raised in the harshest of environments to understand the importance of heroism.
One of the cooler introductions in this issue, and another opportunity for Taylor to flex his creative reimaginings of classic marvel heroes, is the Ghost Raiders; a band of pirates who sold their souls to each be granted the power of the Ghost Rider.
The series takes a traumatic turn with an awful death, and sets the heroes on course to Apocolypse; a course that exacts an awful toll.
Taylor has not spared heroes in this run, as he continues to formulate within the reader that not a single character is safe and that the journey of the Dark Ages story is one paved with sacrifice.
