Is the MCU’s CGI Getting Worse?
With recent fan complaints about the quality of the visual effects in recent films, it is a fair question to ask; Is the MCU’s CGI getting worse?
One thing that Marvel Studios has been none for, above all else, is the phenomenal visual quality of their movies; which, just so happened to be some of the biggest films of all time.
Marvel was clearly defined by their ability to implement a level of scale that was rarely common on the big screen and to craft it in such a way to feel real within the advancements of modern filmmaking technology.
To this day, that had long been seen as the standard set by the MCU, and it was one that is upheld; but with recent criticisms around some of the most recent Phase Four projects, is it fair to wonder if the quality is declining with the rapid production rates of these films?
Is the MCU’s CGI getting worse?
The simple answer is, well, maybe. but the reality is that the answer is much more complicated than that.
Marvel, along with the entire filmmaking industry, experienced what was an unprecedented halt in production, and something that has affected nearly every single industry in the modern world.
The COVID-19 pandemic shut down nearly every operating business in this country, and many others, which forced a reassessment of how these things are done; for the sake of every working individual safety.
As far as we have come since the 2020 shutdown, there were still a lot of alterations to the process; which is why a lot of these films being developed now feel like their lacking.
Different departments operating on different schedules, actors filming scenes in entirely different places as their costars, with different guidelines for safety limiting how much can actually be shot.
Something like She/ Hulk, on the other hand, is perhaps struggling from the massive pressure of content from fans who want something, anything, to insight into what comes next.
Marvel has created this problem, they have committed to the near-insane schedule for their projects but it is a problem nonetheless, and one that will come with half bake computer imagery that will likely be worked out when the project is eventually released.
So, is the MCU’s CGI getting worse? We don’t think so. And with the rapid advancement of technology, and the recovery from the weight of catching up with an insurmountable schedule amidst a global pandemic, it should start to revert back to the beauty of old sooner rather than later.
