Christian Bale Compares Playing Gorr to Playing Batman!
Christian Bale’s first foray into the MCU was as the god-slaying tragic Gorr, but this is not his first trek into the superhero filmscape. Bale recently compared his role of Batman to Gorr.
Before standing opposite Chris Hemsworth’s Thor as Gorr the god butcher, Christian Bale played the role of legendary DC Comics hero Batman. Easily Bale’s most notable role to date, Batman spanned an entire trilogy of films, with the second film The Dark Knight garnering widespread acclaim.
While Batman is a heroic and noble figure in the DC mythos, Thor: Love and Thunder forced Bale to jump to the other side of the spectrum, playing the tragic yet spiteful Gorr the god butcher. In Gorr Bale played an antagonist scorned by the very god that he worshipped, turning him into a vengeful wrathful entity.
While both characters deal with tragedy, Batman losing his parents and Gorr’s loss of his daughter and faith, they enact their future in very different ways.
In speaking to Screenrant Bale noted the level of difficulty in playing a villain was far less than that of playing the hero and much more enjoyable. Bale commented
“They not only have more fun, but they’re easier to play”
Further, Bale highlighted the allure of the onscreen villain stating
“The minute the bad guy walks on the screen, no one’s looking at the good guy anymore.”
Perhaps this holds even more true for the villain Gorr! Gorr’s striking pale visage, highlighted by his piercing yellow eyes immediately takes all attention away from Thor and his allies. Even further, Gorr’s tragedy makes us empathize with him, we feel sorrow for the reason behind his villainy.
Batman’s role in pop culture will cement Batman as one of Bale’s most thought about performances. However, I believe Gorr will remain as one of the MCU’s most intriguing, beguiling, and empathetic villains with Bale forever attached to his character.
Gorr ultimately perishes at the end of Love and Thunder, along with his necrosword. However, we think the necrosword may eventually allude to another Marvel big bad!
The future of the MCU is always uncertain and we never know what ways Kevin Feige and his team will alter things, but we are always excited to see the next MCU chapter!
