Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Breaks Silence on ‘Wonder Man’ Cancelation

Marvel fans may be riding high after the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but they also received some disappointing news last week when reports emerged that Wonder Man had been canceled.

While it is not uncommon for a Marvel television series to end after one season, the Wonder Man news came as a shock because the show had reportedly been renewed just four months earlier.

For a studio that traditionally plans things well in advance, the decision was surprising.

Speculation Runs Rampant

In the aftermath of the announcement, speculation ran rampant over why Marvel had suddenly changed course.

The prevailing theory was that creator Destin Daniel Cretton had become too busy with other projects to continue the series.

Later, however, showrunner Andrew Guest took to TikTok and revealed that Marvel and Disney had simply decided not to move forward.

“There is no movie in the works, and [Destin Daniel Cretton’s] schedule and no one’s schedule was an issue. Yahya [Abdul Mateen II], Destin, Sir Ben [Kingsley] and I all loved making this show. All felt passionately about continuing to do it, and were eager to. Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared,” he said.

“There was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago it did. And that’s essentially all I really know.”

While Guest was obviously blindsided by the decision, series star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II seemingly took the news in stride.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Abdul-Mateen thanked fans for their support throughout Wonder Man‘s run.

“Word just dropped that Wonder Man won’t be coming back for Season 2. (And if you don’t knowww, now ya knoww! 😬) That’s life, right? Everything will shake out,” he began.

“I wanted to say thank you to everybody who WATCHED the show, ENJOYED the show, and SHARED that they enjoyed the show in some way or other. The show worked. And that’s my favorite thing about it.”

Abdul-Mateen also noted that he continues to hear from fans who tell him how much they enjoyed the series.

“I could see it on the faces of the YouTube reactors (because I watched along with y’all this time. Shoutout to y’all) and I can see it in the messages I get saying how the show reminded some of you not to give up, and I feel it in the genuine love shared when I bump into some of you all during the day,” he continued. “So, thinking of you all today. I’m glad we got to be a part of something cool. Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS.”
