MarvelBlog News for April 28th, 2024
The new Deadpool & Wolverine trailer debuted, and the internet stopped everything it was doing to watch.
Let’s talk about all the curse words in this week’s MarvelBlog News.
Deadpool Needs a Swear Jar
The new Deadpool & Wolverine trailer has arrived. You can watch the whole clip here.
As a word of warning, you should make sure no children are within earshot when you do, though.
Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds apparently has been holding a lot in during his Disney era.
I guess the Free Guy delays got to him, as he has loaded Deadpool 3 with swears.
We’re talking about a comical amount of f-bombs and other things I won’t quote here.
There’s enough cussing here to make me uncomfortable, and I’m saying that as someone who plays Xbox Live a lot.
Perhaps the high point of the trailer is Leslie Uggams returning as Deadpool’s roommate, Blind Al.
The two of them reaaaaaaaaally want to do some cocaine, but they know they can’t in a Disney movie.
After Uggams uses all sorts of slang for cocaine, she finally says, “Do you wanna build a snowman?” It’s an uproarious Frozen joke.
The entire trailer is like that, and it once again underscores the overwhelming demand for this film.
In case you’ve forgotten, the teaser for Wolverine & Deadpool aired during the Super Bowl, suggesting people watch a full clip online.
Fans proceeded to do just that, breaking the 24-hour record for viewings of a new trailer.
Based on immediate comments and breakdowns, the new, more detailed trailer appears similarly popular.
Movie theaters have penciled in Deadpool & Wolverine as one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.
Based on the film’s reception thus far, that opinion appears to be justified.
As a Marvel fan, you’re more interested in the details, though. So, let’s talk about the trailer and some things you may have missed.
About the Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer
First, let’s talk about the clever part of the trailer. A bartender is kicking out one of the title characters…but not the one you’d think.
Apparently, Wolverine has had enough and is about to get ejected when Wade Wilson appears.
This universe’s Wolverine doesn’t know Deadpool, but that’s not even the worst part. Wolverine can no longer elongate his claws.
Yes, that leads to jokes about sexual inadequacies of middle-aged men. It’s that kind of trailer.
Still, while the jokes were flying at you, you may have missed several important clues regarding the story and its characters.
For starters, this trailer takes a cue from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Now, that may surprise you. That seems like a film Marvel would want to forget, right?
Well, the movie had one great idea: a multiversal Kang the Conqueror killing countless Avengers.
That same premise appears to apply to (one of?) the villain(s) in the story. It’s Cassandra Nova, the proverbial evil twin.
Apparently, Nova has developed a hobby over the years. She loves killing her twin brother, Charles Xavier, and does it as often as she can.
How does she perform that feat? Well, Dr. Strange and Wong’s Sling Ring portals appear multiple times in the trailer.
The prevailing belief is that Nova or someone else has acquired one, allowing Xavier’s twin to Cain his Abel over and over again.
We also get longer looks at unexpected things like the dead head of an oversized Ant-Man.
Later, some sort of Ant-Man appears in his Giant Man form as well.
We also get a look at Alioth from the Loki television series, which makes sense, given the Time Variance Authority’s presence in the story.
More Easter Eggs
We’re only gonna talk about the Wolverine trailer this week since it was otherwise slow on Marvel news.
Since I was going to write a standalone article about it, I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone…or something less aggressive against birds.
Anyway, we’ve got all sorts of other Easter eggs to mention. For example, Lady Deathstrike appears. She died in a previous Fox film.
We’re also getting more confirmation of a dystopian version of the Old Man Logan storyline from the film, Logan.
Apparently, this particular Wolverine lives in a world that went wrong, which tracks with the comic book version of the story.
Remarkably, Logan the movie is nowhere near as dark as the comic book. Deadpool & Wolverine, on the other hand, might be…
Speaking of maybes, the other characters in the Lady Deathstrike are in dispute.
Some fans have suggested other possibilities. To me, that looks like Callisto and Toad.
There’s a larger third individual whom I cannot identify, but many people think it’s Globb Hermman.
Similarly, we later see Azazel and a bunch of other people whose identities are completely up for debate.
I’ll leave that speculation to others, but I do want to highlight one comic book gem of a reference.
That dog that Deadpool loves on? Yeah, that’s a real character. Meet Dogpool!
When the time comes, I’m gonna buy ALL the Dogpool merchandise!
Finally, this isn’t a Marvel thing at all, but Reynolds famously owns an English soccer team as detailed in Welcome to Wrexham.
Ollie Palmer, one of the players from that team, appears in the bar scene. That’s one way to ensure a player never leaves in free agency.
