MarvelBlog News for June 30th, 2024
In the latest edition of MarvelBlog News, we learn that the Fantastic Four aren’t who you think, Deadpool may avenge, and Marvel will return to Hall H.
Well, true believers, this is a good week for us all.
The Fantastic Four Story Revealed
With The Fantastic Four filming soon, several members of the cast sat down to do interviews.
Some of them were a bit silly but entertaining. For instance, Ebon-Moss Backrach appeared on The Daily Show.
When asked about his character, The Thing, the actor from The Bear pointed out that he was basically playing a giant rock.
How does one prepare to portray the role? According to Moss-Bachrach, he’s been…staring at a bunch of rocks.
Yes, some of the stories have been that silly, but we also learned some real information.
Multiple members of the cast expressed excitement over the script, with Jonathan Quinn stating, “We’re going for it!”
Meanwhile, Ralph Ineson declared the script “Cool as f**k!” So, there’s a belief about the product.
You may wonder why, especially if you lived through the trauma of the 2015 Fantastic Four remake.
Much of the excitement stems from the story itself, which Kevin Feige just revealed.
Feige appeared on The Marvel Podcast, which just debuted last week.
In this official podcast, Feige acknowledged and confirmed the rumors.
The Alternate Timeline
Eagle-eyed observers had noticed that the poster for The Fantastic Four didn’t align with what we know of New York.
To be clear, I mean the New York of the MCU, the one we’ve seen on film several times.
Inconsistencies abounded to the point that they seemed excessive. Nobody at Marvel would be that sloppy.
Sure enough, we’ve since learned that The Fantastic Four’s 1960s story will occur in an alternate universe.
So, the film will still take place in the 1960s, just not the one Marvel has primarily explored thus far.
Depending on your perspective, The Fantastic Four could be the first true exploration of the multiverse in the MCU.
While Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hopped around from realm to realm, it didn’t do a deep dive for the most part.
The only universe we saw often was the one where Strange himself went mad, forcing The Illuminati to act.
Even that storyline only covered 20 minutes of the film, which wasn’t any more than the segment with the evil, three-eyed Strange.
The Fantastic Four will take place in a single realm unless the First Family stumbles into our universe by the end of the story.
That’s a vastly different approach to the multiverse, and the connection could be…Deadpool & Wolverine.
Based on this reveal, I really cannot wait to learn how Deadpool messes up the Time Variance Authority (TVA) and its rules.
Havoc is coming to the MCU!
Marvel Returns to Hall H
While none of us should be surprised, Marvel also confirmed its return to the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC).
This seminal event lost a bit of its luster due to the pandemic, and Marvel stepped away for a while.
The decision likely negatively impacted everyone, and then the industry caught an additional bad break.
Last year’s event might have championed The Marvels and other upcoming MCU titles.
Instead, the Hollywood strikes forced everyone to adjust their plans on the fly, with Marvel ultimately skipping the event.
Everything changes next month, as Marvel will make its triumphant return to Hall H.
At that point, the past five years of nonsense will vanish seemingly overnight.
SDCC starts on July 25th and runs through July 28th. Marvel plans to capitalize on Comic-Con’s momentum immediately afterward.
In fact, The Fantastic Four will begin filming the day after the event ends.
So, the cast will appear, bask in the warm glow of their standing ovation, and then get straight to work.
Marvel plans to take this opportunity seriously, with rumors abounding that it’ll announce a massive slate of projects.
We already know many of the rumors such as Midnight Suns, which we’ve discussed the past two weeks.
However, Marvel has officially confirmed several proposed, long-gestating projects.
At SDCC, we could finally receive another timeline filled with five or six years of upcoming titles.
Frankly, Marvel needs that. So, the studio will throw a ton of marketing weight behind this event.
Notably, the 2024 D23 Expo will take place two weeks later. So, we’re about to learn everything Marvel has in store for us.
Marvel Miscellany
On an Instagram reel, Ryan Reynolds posted a GIF of a raised flag. It was an image of The Avengers.
Immediately afterward, speculation ensued that Deadpool was joining the superhero team.
Given that Marvel has already indicated that 60+ characters will appear in the next Avengers film, I don’t consider that a shocker.
In other Marvel news, Mia Goth spoke up in defense of Blade. A member of the cast, Goth swore that everything is fine.
“The people behind this film really care. They do. They want to make a great movie. That’s the sense that I get from them, and that feels good.”
Sure, you could say that about virtually any project, but it’s probably truer with Marvel movies.
Feige’s devotion to quality is well-established, even when the studio suffers a setback like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
The other story I’m tracking right now involves who will direct Spider-Man 4.
By several accounts, Sony wants to announce a name at SDCC if at all possible.
So, the studio has less than a month to find the ideal person.
Finally, Vanity Fair has published an extensive piece on Deadpool & Wolverine if you’re interested.
