MarvelBlog News for July 13th, 2024
This week, the stars and director of Deadpool & Wolverine sat down for a tell-all interview with Variety.
Remarkably, that story wasn’t the biggest of the week, as Agatha Harkness stole the headlines.
We’ve got trailer fun to discuss in MarvelBlog News!
Agatha All Along
We’ll talk about the other stuff in a bit, but let’s start with my highlight of the week.
I was on Team Agatha back when she was a manipulative crone during the early days of the Fantastic Four.
Watching the character become iconic thanks to WandaVision has been immensely gratifying to me.
As such, I’ve been counting down the days until the Agatha series would come to fruition.
Rumors started basically the moment WandaVision ended, which means we will have waited nearly four years for this.
Now, we finally have our first detailed look at the story, which has evolved over those years.
Marvel couldn’t even settle on a title for the Agatha Harkness spinoff, needing five attempts to get it right.
Now that we know that it was, in fact, Agatha All Along, we can tell that the story will lean into her gothic history.
At the start, the show pays tribute to the introduction of Monica Rambeau and Jimmy Woo on WandaVision.
The difference this time is that Agatha is the detective, which…doesn’t seem right.
Sure enough, the show immediately veers into a demonstration of the hex Wanda has placed on her frenemy.
Then, we meet the rest of Agatha’s anti-coven, a group that somehow despises community but feels the need to be in the comfort of others.
About the Trailer
This two-minute clip provides a distinct Wednesday vibe, which is almost assuredly the point.
After all, the Netflix series was among the most popular ever on streaming, and Agatha All Along would like to follow suit.
We also learn the confirmed date for the show to start. The first two episodes of Agatha All Along will debut on Disney+ on September 18th.
So, we’re about two months away from the semi-sequel to WandaVision.
As a reminder, it’s not the only one. Production on Vision Quest is also underway.
Given that the latter project stars Wanda Maximoff’s lover and father of her fictional children, fans had wondered something.
Will Maximoff appear in Agatha All Along, or will Marvel save her until Vision Quest?
I’m under the impression that she’ll appear in both, but the trailer proves noncommittal.
There’s a teasing shot that the murder victim’s name is W. Maximoff, but we never see Wanda’s face in the clip.
As such, Marvel has hedged its bets. Still, I’d be surprised if Wanda didn’t appear by the end of Agatha All Along.
We’ll find out on or around September 18th! Of course, Marvel may drop more hints at Comic-Con in a couple of weeks.
The Deadpool Interview
As referenced, Deadpool & Wolverine co-stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman performed a no-holds-barred interview with Variety.
The film’s director, Shawn Levy, joined them, and they spoke from the heart, which is to say it was a lot of sophomoric silliness.
Here’s an actual quote: “Dick jokes are normal for Deadpool but novel for Disney.” So, yeah.
As part of a follow-up conversation, MCU head Kevin Feige confides that he had to explain the concept of pegging to some co-workers.
Deadpool 3 isn’t even out in theaters yet, but it’s already disrupted Disney in a profound, albeit disturbing way.
The article also notes something important. Marvel has entrusted Deadpool & Wolverine to do something even Avengers: Endgame didn’t.
This film represents Marvel’s only 2024 theatrical release. It’s an all-or-nothing approach that demonstrates tremendous confidence in the franchise.
To be fair, the first two Deadpool films earned roughly $1.57 billion in box office.
Now, early forecasts suggest that Deadpool 3 could become Disney’s second billion-dollar film of 2024.
Should everything break right, Deadpool 3 might earn as much as the first two films combined.
That statement may prove optimistic, but it underscores how high the awareness is for the upcoming release.
To their credit, the two stars and director have embarked on the most comprehensive media tour in recent memory.
As mentioned last week, they started in China and Korea, but they’ve made themselves available to the Hollywood media as well.
So, should Deadpool 3 underachieve, it won’t be for lack of trying on their part.
Marvel Miscellany
We’ve got some other interesting stories this week despite the fact that news typically slows before Comic-Con.
X-Men ’97 has hired its new writer after the *ahem* unpleasantness with the previous one.
Matthew Chauncey of What If…? transitions to the X-Men animated universe, a choice that makes perfect sense.
Chauncey wrote the holiday episode of What If…? that was a Die Hard knockoff. So, you should already love him.
On the Sony side of Marvel, casting has begun in earnest for the upcoming animated series, Spider-Man Noir.
Rumors have surfaced that the Sandman will appear in the series as an antagonist, but that’s not the best part.
In fact, I would argue that we got two casting updates that are even better.
Iconic actor Brendan Gleeson of my beloved In Bruges has joined the cast. The Academy Award-nominated actor is a perfect fit.
His distinctive accent is ideal for voice acting work. And he’s not even my favorite addition!
Lamorne Morris of New Girl will also portray one of the characters. He’ll play the ever-important Robbie Robertson.
Again, that’s excellent casting, as Morris is an absolute master of finding the joke in any line of dialogue.
If you haven’t watched New Girl, here’s 13 minutes of him being brilliant.
I’m still on the fence about Spider-Man Noir, but this is a strong start.
PS: Just as we went to press, the Captain America: Brave New World trailer dropped. Take a look!
