‘Logan’ Writer Heard That ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Could Ruin His Film’s Ending- Here Is His Verdict
Leading up to the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, there was consternation amongst Marvel fans that Hugh Jackman’s return as the iconic X-Man would undermine the emotional impact of 2017’s Logan.
While Ryan Reynolds, Jackman, and director Shawn Levy told anyone who would listen that they understood they were trotting on hallowed ground, bringing Wolverine back into the fold without ruining the character’s perfect ending was a tough task.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige even went so far as to tell Jackman he should not return for the film.
“I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back. You had the greatest ending in history with ‘Logan.’ That’s not something we should undo.’”
How ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Handles ‘Logan’
In the end, Reynolds and his team used the multiverse to resurrect Jackman’s mutant without affecting Logan’s legacy.
“It’s all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines,” Jackman previously told SiriusXM about returning. “Now we can go back because, you know, it’s science. So, I don’t have to screw with the ‘Logan’ timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too.”
Instead of shying away from the issue, however, Levy, Reynolds, and Jackman tackled things head-on. Just moments into Deadpool & Wolverine, the Merc with the Mouth was digging up Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton and beating TVA agents to death with it. All while NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” played.
When the dust had settled, fans largely embraced Jackman’s return as a Wolverine variant. As is often the case, however, a vocal minority caused a stir.
‘Logan’ Co-Writer Michael Green Weighs In
In a recent interview with IGN, Logan screenwriter Michael Green (who also co-wrote Reynolds’ Green Lantern film) addressed the subject, revealing that many had warned him about what was to come.
“People had warned me ahead of time, ‘Uh, I don’t know how you’re gonna feel about the opening [of Deadpool & Wolverine]’,” Green said. “I’m like, ‘I think I know what’s gonna happen.’ And I did not know! I didn’t know they were gonna go that far.”
In the end, however, Green embraced Deadpool & Wolverine’s opening scene, even calling it a compliment.
“You weren’t meant to take seriously that they were, like, digging him up, and that it was really him,” Green continued. “It felt less like they were trying to change the ending of ‘Logan’ as they were contending with not feeling that they wanted to make a movie as good as they felt ‘Logan’ was, which is a huge compliment! I felt like it was nothing but complimentary.”
The Final Verdict
As his final verdict on Deadpool & Wolverine, Green called the film a “good time,” explaining:
“When we saw it in a full theater, people went bananas to everything. It’s great. It’s a great franchise, like, more, please! You know what I appreciate even more was no Green Lantern jokes because I was partly responsible. … You gotta wear it with a badge of honor!”
Deadpool & Wolverine is in theaters now.
