Marvel Studios Is Set to Enter Its Horror Era
With Agatha All Along set to debut later this month, Marvel is once again wading into the horror genre.
While the studio has traditionally found success in the middle ground between action and comedy, Marvel is no stranger to horror.
Previously released projects, including the Disney+ special Werewolf by Night and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, dove into horror and were largely greeted with acclaim.
Looking ahead, however, it is clear that Marvel is ready to double down.
Brad Winderbaum Discusses the Future of Marvel Horror
In addition to the aforementioned Agatha All Along, Marvel will also explore the horror genre in the animated Marvel Zombies. Then, of course, there is the long-awaited Blade, which is still in development.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, however, Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel television, streaming, and animation, explained that the studios’ foray into horror has less to do with the genre and more with the kind of stories they want to tell.
“I think that it goes back to the filmmaker’s intent,” Winderbaum told EW. “The horror on screen in Agatha is going to be different than the horror on screen in Marvel Zombies, is going to be different than the horror on screen in Blade. It was different than the horror on screen in Moon Knight,” Winderbaum explained.
“It really depends on the vision of the filmmaker on what horror cues you’re pulling from. And that’s not just unique to horror. It’s unique to any genre we’re playing with. Obviously, there’s many different ways to tell a story.”
Marvel’s Plan For the Future
Marvel has long suggested that exploring different genres is the antidote to superhero fatigue. As Winderbaum’s comments show, that is exactly what the studio wants to do.
We will get our next look at how Marvel handles horror when Agatha All Along premieres on September 18.
