Elizabeth Olsen Talks ‘WandaVision’ and Her MCU Future
As strange as it seems now, there was a time when many thought that Marvel Studios would be unable to make television shows.
Prior to the release of WandaVision in 2021, the story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) unfolded exclusively in theaters.
Interestingly, to introduce streaming audiences to the MCU, Marvel decided to create a series grounded in the history of television starring two of the lesser-known Avengers.
Elizabeth Olsen Reflects on ‘WandaVision’
In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, Elizabeth Olsen, who played Wanda Maximoff in the series, reflected on the development of WandaVision.
“WandaVision. No one forced me to do that! I have made a choice to continue on with Marvel and they’ve made a choice to continue on with me,” she remembered.
“I was really scared about doing a Marvel project for TV because there are otherworldly, larger than life characters that are seen in films, and I didn’t know if it would still work on the television at home. But I had confidence in the format because the storytelling really honored the TV medium.”
“We Were Marvel’s Weird Cousin”
While WandaVision (along with Loki) would become perhaps the definitive Marvel streaming series, Olsen admits that the cast felt like outsiders at the time.
“We really felt we were Marvel’s weird cousin. We didn’t know it was going to have such a response,” Olsen admitted. “It came out during the pandemic and it almost had way more relevance to everyone’s lives; [we were all ] Trying to function in these bubbles that we were put in, and then there was this world outside of a bubble. No-one even knew what reality was that point.”
Will Wanda Maximoff Return?
While Wanda Maximoff seemingly met her end at the conclusion of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the story of WandaVision is set to continue in the upcoming spinoffs Agatha All Along and Vision Quest.
As for Olsen, her MCU future remains clouded. In a recent interview with FM 104, however, the actress admitted that she would be open to returning.
“It’s a character I love going back to when there’s a way to use her well and I think I’ve been lucky when I started I was used well… and they kind of didn’t know what to do with me for a second there! If there’s a good way to use her, I’m always happy to come back.”
As any Marvel fan knows, death is not always permanent. Perhaps then, we will see Wanda Maximoff again in the MCU.
