Elizabeth Olsen Defends Green-Screen Acting in Marvel Films
After years of watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) take abuse from online critics and Hollywood luminaries such as Francais Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and Quintin Tarantino, some of Marvel’s biggest stars are hitting back.
Last week, Sebastian Stan, who is set to reprise his role as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier in the upcoming Thunderbolts* made the argument that Marvel’s brand of blockbuster films is keeping the Hollywood eco-system afloat.
Now, Elizabeth Olsen is speaking up.
Olsen’s Defense
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Olsen discussed the particular challenges of filming a Marvel film, including the amount of green-screen acting. According to the actress, it is not as easy as it looks.
“You really have to embrace this dumb point of view, where you feel like a 7-year-old playing make-believe,” she said. “I do believe that at some point they should release a full version of one of the movies, without any of the special effects so people can see how hard it is.”
Since the MCU began to dominate theaters, there has been a notion that the films did not constitute as “cinema” and that the movie’s stars were not really “acting”.
As Olsen points out, however, acting in a CGI-filled Marvel movie is often more difficult than in a more practical film.
Will the Scarlet Witch Return?
While Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff seemingly died destroying the Darkhold at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans have held out hope that we will see the Scarlet Witch again.
With the Marvel multiverse set to come together for Avengers: Doomsday and Olsen publically stating that she would “love to return,” perhaps fans will get their wish.
