Why Gambit’s Post-Credit Scene Had to Be Deleted From ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
After over a decade of trying to get a stand-alone Gambit film made, Channing Tatum finally got the chance to portray the Cajun mutant in Deadpool & Wolverine.
In an appearance rife with humor, action, and emotion, Tatum’s Gambit proved himself a hero when he joined other ghosts of Marvel’s past, including X-23, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, and Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, in helping the film’s titular heroes get back to their universe.
Despite his heroics, Deadpool & Wolverine left it unclear whether Gambit was subsequently stranded in the Void or if someone got out.
Gambit’s Deleted Post-Credit Scene
In August, however, Ryan Reynolds shared a deleted scene in which Gambit is standing among fallen adversaries when a “Marvel Sparkle Circle” portal opens behind him. Smiling, Gambit turns around to leave.

Including the planned end-credit scene would have left the door open for Tatum to return as Gambit while also giving the character a happy ending.
So, why was it deleted?
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Editor Explains the Cut
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Deadpool & Wolverine co-director Shane Reid explained that the scene was cut because it “felt too much like a traditional Marvel Coda.”
“A rhythm to the end credit sequence that we had [was] the Legacy reel [which] was a really important part of the process,” Reid explained. “Then it was from there, we knew that we had this really wonderful mic-drop-coda with Johnny Storm that was going to close the film out.”
Unfortunately for Gambit fans, that led to the scene being cut.
“I think the Gambit Sparkle Circle feels like a traditional Marvel coda. And I think what these guys were always trying to do was sort of subvert the audience’s expectations in that sense,” Reid explained.
Will Gambit Return?
In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, Tatum has remained optimistic that he will get the chance to play Gambit again. In his post sharing the deleted scene, Ryan Reynolds noted that Gambit’s exit from the Void can still be seen on one of the TVA monitors.
Perhaps then, Tatum will get his wish, and we will see Gambit again after all.
