Benedict Cumberbatch Is Excited About Continuing Doctor Strange’s Story
While the status of many of Marvel’s biggest stars, including Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and Brie Larson, remains unclear, one Avenger is definitely returning.
In a recent interview with Variety at the Red Sea Film Festival, Benedict Cumberbatch declared that he was not done playing Doctor Strange in the MCU.
After explaining that Strange is a “complex man motivated by the need to control everything at any cost,” Cumberbatch stated that there is more for him to explore.

“I am interested in seeing where these costs take him,” he said. “There is a lot more to play and it’s very exciting.”
Doctor Strange Expanded the Marvel Universe
Looking back at Strange’s introduction in the MCU, Cumberbatch believes that the sorcerer’s spirituality added a new dynamic to the franchise.
“It was something we hadn’t seen in the MCU, a whole new ground. Also just what he brings in terms of harnessing power through sheer will. That is a superpower and, as an origin story, it is pretty rich.”

Cumberbatch joined the MCU for 2016’s Doctor Strange, infusing the franchise with a mysticism that it had previously lacked. The actor would reprise his role in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In the latter film, Cumberbatch admits that he took inspiration from his younger co-star.
“Watching Tom Holland off the success of the first ‘Spider-Man’ film was magic. I [realized] I gotta have fun. I can’t just turn up with the collar,” he recalled.

“The best stuff on those huge canvases, those things with a huge amount of responsibility and expectation from all these amazing, devoted fans, is to play and have fun and be free to keep it alive. [Otherwise] it becomes stale.”
Will Strange Lead the Avengers?
In the wake of Avengers: Endgame, Doctor Strange was poised to lead the Avengers forward. With the Marvel multiverse set to come together for Avengers: Doomsday, the former Sorcerer Supreme may soon get his chance.
