William Dafoe Teases a Possible Return as Green Goblin
Nearly 20 years after making his debut as Green Goblin in 2002’s Spider-Man, Willem Dafoe reprised his iconic role in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Perfectly portraying the schizophrenic nature of the iconic villain, Dafoe’s Norman Osborn returned with a vengeance, serving as the ultimate multiversal Spider-Man foe.
After killing the MCU’s Aunt May, Green Goblin nearly drove Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to his breaking point. Following the battle at the Statue of Liberty, Holland’s Spider-Man seemed poise to bludgeon Osborne to death when Tobey Macguire’s Spider-Man swooped in and stopped him.
Eventually, the three Peter Parkers worked together to inject Osborn with the Anti-Goblin Serum, banishing the Goblin persona once and for all. When Osborne, Otto Octavius, Flint Marko, and Macguire’s Peter Parker were finally sent back to their home universe, it seemed as if the Green Goblin’s story had come to an end.
Dafoe Says He Could Return
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, however, Dafoe did not sound convinced that the Green Goblin’s story was over.
“We’ll see. We’ll see,” he began. “I could come back. Tom was great to work with, and the whole series of Spider-Man films that I did were great fun.”
How Norman Osborne Could Return
With the Marvel multiverse set to come together for the events of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, it is unclear where or when Spider-Man 4 will take place.
Due to the multiversal nature of the current MCU, however, there is seemingly ample opportunity for Dafoe to return.
Now, 22 years after the Green Goblin first appeared on the big screen, Norman Osborne remains the definitive Spider-Man villain. Hopefully, we have not seen Dafoe don the mask for the final time.
