Beau DeMayo Blasts ‘What If…?’ Season 3
The war between X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo and Marvel Studios took another turn yesterday when the former showrunner shared his feelings on Season 3 of What If…?.
“#whatif season 3 yikes just yikes”. DeMayo wrote. “I’d watch more to give notes on how it could’ve easily been done better but I have some water to watch boil”.
The Genesis of the DeMayo/Marvel Fued
To understand DeMayo’s latest comments, we must discuss his relationship with Marvel. After creating X-Men ’97, DeMayo was fired by the studio just days before the series debuted on Disney+ last March.
Initially, it seemed like the creator and Marvel would remain civil, with DeMayo promoting X-Men ’97 and interacting with fans after each episode.
Things changed, however, in August when DeMayo was not invited to the Creative Emmy Awards.
After complaining about the slight, DeMayo accused Marvel of stripping him of any credits for Season 2 of X-Men ’97 because of a June Gay Pride post.
“Above is #XMen fan-art I posted on Instagram for Gay Pride in June,” he continued. “On June 13, #Marvel sent a letter notifying me that they’d stripped my Season 2 credits due to the post. Sadly, this is the latest in a troubling pattern I suffered through while on working on #XMen97 and #Blade.”
Marvel Fires Back
Marvel quickly responded to DeMayo’s accusations, revealing that the showrunner creator was fired after an internal investigation turned up “egregious misconduct.”
Subsequently, DeMayo filed suit against Marvel and posted a 30-minute video on his OnlyFans, where he bluntly stated that he “no longer felt safe at the studio as a gay Black man.”
That brings us back to today.
DeMayo’s ‘What If…?’ Thoughts
After sharing his view on What If…? Season 3, DeMayo commented on the creative changes behind the scenes. After Season 2 of What If…? showrunner A.C. Bradley left the series. She was replaced by Matthey Chauncey, who also happens to be DeMayo’s replacement on X-Men ’97.
“This is also the season where AC Bradley completely stepped back for Chauncey to take over,” DeMayo said.
“I know Marvel and Chauncey tore up my intercut time hopping across the first episodes because it was ‘too complicated,’” he continued. “Yet complication and layers is what this show #whatif needed.”
Season 3 Has Not Been Well Received
While DeMayo’s perspective obviously comes with a bias, many of the sentiments shared by the former showrunner have been shared by fans. What If…? Season 3 was seen as a drop-off by many.
As for DeMayo, he gave this final thought. Season 3 of the series, he said, “has no substance and feels like fanfic. The dialogue is flat and so obvious, and some of the premises are just weird.”
What If…? is streaming on Disney+.
