Benedict Cumberbatch Quickly Texted Kevin Feige When He Heard Robert Downey Jr. Was Returning to the MCU
The Russo shocked the Marvel universe last year when they took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con and revealed that Robert Downey Jr. was returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to portray Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
As we saw in the aftermath of the big reveal, it was not only fans who were shocked by the news. While Tom Holland later revealed that he knew Downey was returning, many other Marvel stars were caught off guard.
Gwyneth Paltrow, who starred alongside Downey in all three Iron Man movies, commented on Downey’s Instagram post, writing, “I don’t get it, are you a baddie now?”

Downey’s fellow Avengers, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner, also chimed in.
“Hey Brat, green suits you,” Ruffalo wrote.
“Bringing the DOOM 🔥!!!” Renner added.
Florence Pugh, who is set to reprise her role as Yelena Belova in Thunderbolts*, watched a video of Downey’s unmasking with her mouth open.

Benedict Cumberbatch Was Shocked By the News
In a recent interview with Variety, Benedict Cumberbatch shared his reaction to finding that Downey was returning. It turns out, he quickly texted Kevin Feige.
“I texted, ‘What the f—?’ and then quickly added, ‘Good what-the-f—. I mean, good what-the-f—,’” Cumberbatch said.

While Cumberbatch has revealed that Doctor Strange will not appear in Avengers: Doomsday, it seems likely that the former Sorcerer Supreme will square off with Downey’s Doom in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Strange, the actor explained, is “quite central to where things might go.”
