Joe and Anthony Russo Reveal ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Will Film Back to Back
Once upon a time, not so very long ago, it looked like Joe and Anthony Russo’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) had come to an end.
After the financial and creative triumphs of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the Russos were open about their desire to branch out beyond the confines of Marvel and explore other opportunities.
Then, perhaps the only project that could have lured them back came calling.
At last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel announced that the Russo Brothers were officially returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The Russos would later explain that Secret Wars had always been one of their favorite stories, and they were intrigued by the challenge of bringing a multiversal melee to the big screen.
The directors assured fans that if the next Avengers adventure could not top Endgame, they would not have returned.
When ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ Will Begin Filming
In a recent interview with Deadline at the world premiere of The Electric State, the Russos shared new insight into how Doomsday and Secret Wars will be filmed.

“It’s all in London, we’re shooting them fairly back-to-back, it’s a lot of work again, we may or may not survive, we’ll see,” Joe Russo explained. “But we’re very excited about it. We found a way into the story that we think is gonna be challenging for audiences, it’s challenging for us to execute. And it’s really exciting for us, it gets us out of bed to do it.”
What Avengers Will Return?
When the directors were pressed on who would suit up in the next Avengers adventure, they refused to give anything away.
“Who knows? I don’t know, I don’t know who we’re gonna see. I still don’t know,” Joe said.

“If you close your eyes and use your imagination, you can see anyone you want,” Anthony added.
While Joe admitted that he knows fans want to see The Electric State star Chris Pratt return as Star-Lord, he refused to set anything in stone.

“Anybody in the Marvel bag could show up in this movie,” Russo concluded.
Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will hit theaters in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
