The Russo Brothers Confirm That Tony Stark’s Death Will Be a Major Part of Doctor Doom’s Story
At last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Robert Downey Jr. shocked the Marvel universe by announcing that he would be returning to the MCU.
After portraying Tony Stark/Iron Man for over a decade, it appeared that Downey’s time with Marvel had come to an end following the events of Avengers: Endgame. Then, the Russo Brothers came calling.
Eventually, Downey agreed to return to the MCU for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. However, there is one significant catch. This time around, Downey will not be playing Tony Stark but Victor von Doom.

Tony Star’s Death Will Impact Doctor Doom’s Arrival
In a recent interview with The Times Joe and Anthony Russo were asked about Tony Stark’s relationship with Doctor Doom. Specifically, they were asked if Iron Man’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame will have any bearing on Doom’s arrival.

“We can’t explain that as it’s part of the story. But there’s nobody else in the world who could play this character the way he’s about to,” Anthony teased.

Russo’s declaration that Downey was the only actor who could play this version of Doctor Doom seemingly confirms what we have all expected: that the iconic Marvel villain will somehow have a deep connection to Tony Stark.
Will Doom be a Tony Stark Variant?
The prevailing notion has long been that Downey’s Doom will be a Tony Stark variant. This would be an easy narrative way to explain why the characters look the same. It would also give Marvel plenty of emotional ground to work with, as the Avengers would be forced to fight a version of their fallen leader.
