Is ‘Shang-Chi 2’ Happening Or Not?
When Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings earned more than $450 million at the global box office during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Simu Liu appeared poised to become one of Marvel’s next breakout stars.
With the film earning praise from critics and audiences alike, Shang-Chi seemed destined to become a key franchise in Marvel’s post-Avengers: Endgame future.

In the years since, however, Liu’s titular hero has been largely absent from the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
While we know that Liu will suit back up for Avengers: Doomsday, updates on Shang-Chi 2 have been few and far between.

Now, however, fans have reason to hope.
Simu Liu’s Disappointing Update
At San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, Simu Liu was asked for an update on Shang-Chi 2.
His answer did not inspire confidence.

“Look, I’m going to take the high road here and say that it’s really incredible how much the fans continue to show up for this character and continue to express their enthusiasm,” he told Variety.
“I hope they continue to do so, because I think it is making a difference.”

After noting that it had been five years since the first Shang-Chi movie, Liu noted that it was “incredible” how much he is still asked about the film.
“I will be there. I will crawl through broken glass to do it if I have to,” he concluded.

Following Liu’s comments, fans began to speculate that Shang-Chi 2 was no longer in active production.
Thankfully, that is not the case.
Destin Daniel Cretton’s Revelation
While promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day, director Destin Daniel Cretton confirmed that Shang-Chi 2 is “in active development right now.”

“Yeah, Dave Callaham and I have been developing it. We’ve been jumping into it recently. So, I really hope it is going to happen,” Cretton told IndieWire.
At this point, it is unlikely that Shang-Chi 2 will hit theaters before 2029 or 2030.
For now, at least, fans can take solace in the fact that plans for the film are still in motion.
