‘Wonder Man’ Co-Creator Reveals Why the Series Was Canceled
Marvel fans got devastating news last week when reports emerged that Wonder Man had been canceled.
The news was particularly surprising, as the critically acclaimed Disney+ series had been renewed for a second season just four months earlier.

Here is how we got here.
‘Wonder Man’ Debuted Last January
As a quick recap, Wonder Man was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest.

Debuting last January, the series introduced audiences to Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), a struggling actor who secretly has superpowers.
Eventually, Williams forms an unlikely friendship with Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley, reprising his role from Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). It is a relationship that has lasting implications for both men.

“Aspiring Hollywood actor Simon Williams is struggling to get his career off the ground. During a chance meeting with Trevor Slattery, an actor whose biggest roles may be well behind him, Simon learns legendary director Von Kovak is remaking the superhero film ‘Wonder Man,’” the series’ synopsis reads.
Marvel’s Strange Decision
While fans were looking forward to seeing Simon Williams’ story continue, it was not to be.

In the aftermath of the series’ cancellation, there was much speculation about why Marvel decided to reverse course.
The prevailing theory was that Cretton had become too busy with other projects to dedicate himself to the series.

Now, Guest has weighed in.
Andrew Guest Clears the Air
Wonder Man showrunner and co-creator Andrew Guest took to TikTok this weekend to shed some light on what exactly happened to the series.

He quickly dismissed many of the rumors that have been circulating.
“Just want to say I’ve been listening,” Guest said. “I appreciate you all. I feel how you all feel, and I just want to clear up when I can here. This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works, and [Destin Daniel Cretton’s] schedule and no one’s schedule was an issue. Yahya [Abdul Mateen II], Destin, Sir Ben [Kingsley] and I all loved making this show. All felt passionately about continuing to do it, and were eager to. Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared.”
According to Guest, the writers’ room was supposed to assemble this month, with production beginning early next year.
Then, the unthinkable happened.

“There was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago it did. And that’s essentially all I really know.”
The Takeaway
While Guest did not explain exactly what changed, his comments are nonetheless interesting.

Clearly, something shifted within Marvel Studios.
Whether that was a creative decision tied to the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, a broader change in Marvel Television’s strategy, or something else entirely remains to be seen.
