This week: The Avengers flex their drawing power, while Disney+ course-corrects.

We’ve got a lot to discuss in this week’s MarvelBlog News.

Party Like It’s 2019

Before the year began, Marvel announced a re-release for September 2026.

And so we should all take a moment to remember the good times:

In less than one month, Avengers Endgame: Encore will debut in theaters.

Marvel has wisely decided to re-release the movie to boost hype for its sequel.

With Avengers: Doomsday nearly here, Marvel is once again attempting to reboot.

The studio did this in 2023 and again in 2025, with lackluster results in both instances.

Now, Kevin Feige and his team are playing their hole card with a reminder.

When Endgame came out, viral videos showed euphoric crowd reactions.

This commercial displays one such instance, but there were countless ones.

Before 2020, the MCU could do no wrong…save for Thor: The Dark World.

In the pandemic’s aftermath, people shout, “superhero fatigue!” at the drop of a hat.

Well, they haven’t done it as much lately for something we’ll discuss in a bit.

But the reality is that Marvel has taken several steps back during the 2020s.

Now, the studio wants to push past its recent mistakes by getting back to basics.

And the early results are quite promising, especially in terms of ticket sales.

Last week, I discussed how Avengers: Doomsday had surpassed Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

That statement sounds shocking, although it does require a bit of context.

Brand New Day released all its opening weekend tickets at once.

Doomsday took a different approach by releasing its best screens early.

This is part of Marvel’s silly “Infinity Vision” nonsense, forced by Dune 3 getting all the IMAX screens.

So, Doomsday’s first-day sales aren’t an apples-to-apples comparison to Brand New Day’s.

Still, Doomsday won that particular race, which had to make Marvel happy.

On Your Left

On the heels of that announcement, Endgame just broke another record.

The re-release earned more box office in just two hours than any other re-release ever had.

Later comments from insiders indicated that Endgame started VERY strong.

One even suggested that the re-release out-earned the opening day of The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

As such, Marvel seems to think that audiences are ready to forgive and forget.

Of course, it helps that the Russo Brothers have described the film as required viewing.

They’re flatly stating that people should prep before the release of Doomsday.

I’d argue that these comments fly in the face of something else Marvel’s doing.

Several other insiders feel strongly that the MCU won’t be a thing on Disney+ from now on.

Don’t get me wrong. The previous episodes will remain available on the streaming service.

However, Marvel appears ready to abandon new projects after Vision Quest.

The belief is that Feige has heard the criticism about the Disney+ content.

Marvel had intended these stories to augment the ones told in the movies.

Instead, fans complain that they feel like homework…kinda like watching Endgame again before Doomsday.

Ironically, most of us were going to do that anyway, but now it feels forced.

The Feiges are telling fans to go, lest they be lost during Doomsday.

That’s the precise complaint fans have expressed about shows like Ms. Marvel.

People who failed to watch that movie didn’t know the character when she appeared in The Marvels.

Is This the New Plan?

I previously mentioned that a lot is riding on Vision Quest’s performance.

This thought process is precisely the reason why I’d said that.

With Daredevil: Born Again season two once again failing to chart, Marvel can’t catch a break.

Fans aren’t watching the new content on Disney+ for the most part.

Then, they’re using the fact that they didn’t watch as justification not to see the movies, either.

Generally speaking, nobody needed to watch Ms. Marvel to follow The Marvels.

However, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Captain America: Brave New World mostly required it.

Otherwise, fans would have wondered why Wanda was evil, at a minimum.

Also, nobody would have known who Sam Wilson’s new sidekick was.

For the body of 15 years, fans clamored for even more Marvel.

Then, when Feige gave it to them, everyone flipped and said, “That’s too much!”

So, Marvel will go back to the drawing board with its MCU plans.

If Vision Quest performs well, we could see more Marvel series on Disney+.

Realistically, that seems like the less likely scenario at the moment, though.

Disney just firmed up Marvel’s release schedule for the next few years.

With so much money on the line, they won’t jeopardize that for any uncertain series.

So, unless Vision Quest does the unexpected – which it very well might – the MCU will simplify.

In the short term, we’ll get Marvel movies, not television shows.

Marvel Miscellany

Spider-Man: Brand New Day just passed Endgame at the domestic box office.

Amusingly, Endgame will close the gap a bit in September.

However, Brand New Day likely has the spot permanently locked down.

In terms of global box office, the film should enter the top four this weekend.

I don’t think it’ll pass Endgame worldwide, but I rule nothing out at this point.

This film alone has silenced all the criticisms of superhero fatigue.

Now, the onus lies on Doomsday to maintain momentum.

As long as the film does that, Marvel can put these six years of utter nonsense in the rearview mirror.
