TARGET: Alfred Molina, Doctor Octopus, Sinister Six Returns!
Alfred Molina is returning as Doctor Otto Octavius! It was recently revealed that the actor is reprising his role as Doc Ock from Sam Raimi’s 2004 Spider-Man 2, further fueling the rumors swirling about a live-action Spider-verse introduction of the Sinister Six.
Alfred Molina Returns as Doc Ock
Hollywood Reporter recently revealed that Alfred Molina would be returning as the eight-armed Super Villain. Molina’s excellent portrayal of Otto Octavius – a brilliant scientist, turned eight-armed supervillain and archenemy of Toby Maguire‘s Spider-Man – earned him a top spot as a fan-favorite from the Raimi-verse.
Fans widely lauded Molina’s performance as the turbulent super villain in Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. Some in the super villain community feel he is the only logical choice for the part, while others argue persuasively for the inclusion of a second octobot wielding scientist, Doctor Olivia Octavius.
My vote is cast. We have a Spider-verse. Why not keep expanding the cast to include an Octo-verse too?
Alfred Molina’s Back in Octoarms
The first whispers of Alfred Molina’s involvement in the upcoming Spider-Man movie were at the end of last month, when GWW revealed that he was spotted on set. Although Marvel Studios likes to keep plot details secret, here is what we know so far about the actor’s return:
We were informed Molina arrived on set a bit ago to work on some stunt choreography and has started filming his scenes in the past couple weeks. The source insured [GWW] Molina is in full Doc Ock mode but couldn’t confirm as to whether this version of the tentacle laden doctor was the same from Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 or a new version.
With Molina’s Doc Ock’s announcement, it seems the MCU is planning to tie together three generations of Spider-Man movies and introduce an inter-dimensional Sinister Six!
Inter-Dimensional Multi-Verse?
Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock isn’t the only Spider-verse character returning to the latest installment of the franchise. Jamie Foxx is also returning as Electro after playing a part in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (starring Andrew Garfield as the web-slinger).
Even more exciting, Foxx teased at the possibility that all three Spider-Men – Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland – could appear in the film in a since-deleted Instagram post.
Either way, with Foxx joining the cast, the strange doctor taking on a pivotal role as Peter Parker’s mentor, and now Molina entering the fold, it seems more and more likely that we will see an inter-dimensional Sinister Six. And this reporter is preparing her web-slingers to join the fight since it looks like we could finally see the Sinister Six in the MCU.
Spider-Man: Homesick (?) Coming Soon
Although the title of the upcoming movie has yet to be confirmed – it might be Spider-Man: Homesick – and few of the plot details have been released, the cast of the third film is really shaping up to be the whose who of the live-action Spider-verse.
Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home) is returning as director for the third installment. Tom Holland is also returning as the MCU Spider-Man after he famously quit the production during the negations between Sony Pictures and Marvel Entertainment.
Let’s all thwip in excitment!
This first round-up of Spider-Man casting announcements also included the news that some of the MCU’s hardest hitters and most beloved characters are returning. Hollywood Reporter previously announced that Benedict Cumberbatch is going to appear in the movie as Doctor Strange to take over for Iron Man as a mentor for Peter Parker.
It was also previously announced that Spider-Man mainstays are expected to return, including Zendaya (MJ), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), and Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson).
Currently, the Untitled Spider-Man Sequel is slated to hit theaters or streaming services on December 17, 2021.
