RUMOR: X-Men Reboot Possible, ‘The Mutants’ in Development
Is it possible that “Fietro” is more than just a WandaVision red herring? The latest from the Marvel Multiverse rumor mill is that the X-Men are coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! According to a new report from The Illuminerdi, Marvel Studios is developing a mutant reboot under the tentative (and somewhat uninspired) title, The Mutants.
Marvel Studios’ The Mutants in Development
The latest information from the fairly reliable Marvel Multiverse rumor mill, Marvel Studios and Marvel Chief Creative Officer and President Kevin Feige are currently developing a feature film that’s intended to introduce the mutants to the rest of the MCU, and it’s aptly titled, The Mutants.
The mutant movie is already in development, but little else is known about the project, at least according to The Illuminerdi’s sources.
Mutant History X
Marvel Studios gained the film rights to the mutants and their related characters following the Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019. Fox Studios itself produced over a dozen mutant movies, but after almost two decades with the entertainment company, the Marvel Comics’ mutants are finally taking their rightful place as part of the MCU.
Feige has been teasing the arrival of Marvel’s mutants for awhile now, but the excitement reached a fever pitch with Even Peter‘s Fietro making an appearance in several episodes of WandaVision on Disney+.
Furthermore, according to Comic Book Resource, Feige has been name dropping the Mutants and the Fantastic Four (the film rights to their story were previously owned by Fox too) every chance he gets: (1) the Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019; (2) the Walt Disney Company’s Investor Day 2020; and (3) the confirmation that Deadpool 3 is in development at Marvel Studios.
With so little information about the project at this time, it’s hard to make too many speculations about in which capacity these characters might arrive. However, for the legions of mutant fans out there, it’s exciting just to know that the project is indeed in development (and may we suggest reading the mutant comics sprinkled throughout this article while you await official news on the project).
Coming to the MCU: NO MORE MUTANTS NO MORE
Recently, Marvel Studios has confirmed multiple new projects coming to the MCU in addition to the films and television series we already knew were in development, such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Fantastic Four.
The announcement that the Fantastic Four are coming to the MCU confirmed the official start of formerly Fox Studios-owned properties coming to the Marvel Multiverse.
At that time, there was no official word on the mutants coming to the MCU. Recently, however, Disney and Marvel Studios confirmed (officially) that they were working on Deadpool 3 with Ryan Reynolds and the sister writing team, Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin.
Feige has mentioned the mutants in passing over the past couple of years since the acquisition of Fox Studios. Do you think this rumor is true? Are we finally going to see The Mutants in the MCU?
