90s Animated Spider-Man May Appear in INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2
According to a report from the Hashtag Show, the upcoming sequel Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 may feature an appearance by Christopher Daniel Barnes, the voice actor who played Peter Parker in the extremely popular 1990s Spider-Man animated series (for those of you who weren’t born by the ’90s, ALL 65 episodes are streaming on Disney+, so THWIP up that remote!).
Dispelling rumors… or fueling them?
In a video posted to instagram on Wednesday, April 7th, 2021, Barnes stated that he had been hearing “rumors” floating around the internet and wanted to address them. According to Barnes, there is no truth to the rumor that he will be appearing in “the next Spider-Man movie.”
However, as pointed out by the Hashtag Show’s article (which has been updated to include the Instagram video from Barnes), technically, the “next” Spider-Man movie will be the upcoming live-action Spider-Man: No Way Home, arriving in December 2021 and starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker (and rumored to be featuring some Spider-Verse shenanigans all its own, with previous actors to play the wall crawler – including Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield – rumored to be making appearances themselves).
So what gives? Is Barnes slyly avoiding confirmation that he’ll appear in Into the Spider-Verse 2 in order to maintain a surprise appearance? Or does his disavowal of any involvement in “the next Spider-Man movie” imply that he won’t be involved in the next animated Spider-Man movie?
Animated Spider-Man: Threat or Menace?
So will Barnes make an appearance as an alternate universe version of Peter Parker when Into the Spider-Verse 2 arrives in October 2022? If so, this is a news story worthy of the Editor in Chief of the Daily Bugle himself, J. Jonah Jameson (frequently played in live-action, animation, and even video games by the indispensable J.K. Simmons)!
