What If…? Chadwick Boseman in Final Role
Yesterday, the internet exploded as new footage of What If…? revealed tantalizing hints about what’s in store when the animated anthology series finally arrives on August 11th, 2021! Two topics in particular caught Twitter’s attention, and two Marvel Cinematic Universe-related keywords were soon trending: Howard the Duck (waugh) and Chadwick Boseman!

Boseman passed away in August 2020 after a clandestine battle with cancer. The actor has since been honored in many corners of the Marvel Universe.

However, it seems some casual fans didn’t realize that Boseman would be appearing as T’Challa in the upcoming animated What If…? series. Not our devoted Marvel Blog True Believers, of course, who have long been aware that Boseman would be appearing as T’Challa in the series.
But he won’t necessarily be appearing as Black Panther… drum roll, please…
What If…? T’Challa were Star-Lord?
The episode will ask what would have happened if T’Challa had become Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). There are several scenes from the story in the trailer, including what seems to be T’Challa being abducted by Mary Poppins Yondu (Michael Rooker).

Plus, we also see this version of Star-Lord facing off against lots of adversaries, who mock his catchphrase… I guess the more things change, the more things stay the same (see Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 1 on Disney+)!

It’s also possible that Boseman may appear as T’Challa in another episode of the series: for one thing, the trailer shows off a storyline that sees Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), the antagonist of Black Panther (2018), joining forces with Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.)… could we see another version of Boseman in this? Only time will tell!
What If…? Wednesdays
Here’s one thing I can say about the storyline where T’Challa becomes Star-Lord: if it ends with Boseman’s character heading off to the stars to continue his adventure, there will not be a single dry eye watching the screen.
