REVIEW: Bad Moon Rising in MOON KNIGHT #2
In Moon Knight #2 by Jed MacKay, Alessandro Cappuccio, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Cory Petit, with a main cover by Steve McNiven and Frank D’Armata, the groundwork laid in Moon Knight #1 is selectively built upon… and the framework for a really great run of Marc Spector’s adventures begins to take shape!
Focus on Mr. Knight
In the second issue of the series, we get a focus on Mr. Knight himself.
However, and this isn’t a complaint, this didn’t have to be the way the book was structured: the introduction of a new antagonist as the final-page reveal of Moon Knight #1 means that this issue could have dug into what defines this run’s villain.
Instead, we get the opportunity to see Moon Knight in what is more or less a “standalone adventure,” in his new role as the priest and protector of this neighborhood.
Everything about this story worked well, from the way we got to see how residents of the neighborhood can approach Mr. Knight at his local church to how readily he will help those who need it (and teaching important lessons through genre is something that almost always speaks to me as a reader).
Plus, the antagonist for this storyline has a really gross power that you won’t forget any time soon… and Moon Knight is just the hero to face him down, for reasons you’ll see in the book!
Vampire Time
In her review of Moon Knight #1 for Comics Beat, my wife said that one of the most interesting characters in this story is Reese, a woman who was recently turned into a vampire and has subsequently become Moon Knight’s assistant.
In this issue, we get to see more of Reese and her vampiric issues, which is a very nice addition to the story… and it helps us learn more about Mr. Knight himself in the process.
