Clark Gregg on Returning as Agent Phil Coulson!
In an interview published on the Entertainment Weekly website on Tuesday, August 24th, 2021, Clark Gregg discussed returning to the role of Agent Phil Coulson in the next episode of the Marvel Studios animated series What If…?, which he originated way back in the movie that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2008’s Iron Man.
Lots of Loki
In the next episode of What If…?, which will arrive for streaming on Disney+ tomorrow, on Wednesday, August 25th, 2021, viewers will get to see what would have happened if Loki had arrived on Earth considerably earlier than he did in 2012’s The Avengers.
That movie is an important turning point for Coulson. In the Sacred Timeline, it’s where he was murdered by Loki (a fact that was brought up again in the first episode of season one of Loki on Disney+, so you know it’s still canon – at least on one timeline).
“Because the fans are so flexible or limber from all the multiverse stuff that they’ve been wrestling with for a couple years, I think you’ll really get a kick out of it,” Gregg said to EW.
In the full interview with EW, Gregg discussed the fact that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was playing with multiversal theory before the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and how this version of Coulson is true to the one that we know, just in a very alternate scenario.
For one thing, this version of Coulson is less of a fan of Captain America and more of a fan of Thor! Gregg said in the interview that,
Oh my gosh, yes. I mean, look, it’s very true to life in that the guy who plays Agent Coulson has certainly spent his fair amount of time marveling at Hemsworth in all his glory. [Laughs] So apparently, there is no Chris that I don’t have a huge crush on.
But what other changes will take place? We’re on the edge of our seats, Marvel Blog True Believers…
