Lin-Manuel Miranda Almost Played an Iconic Villain in the MCU
Prior to the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the Marvel Cinematic Universe largely kept Peter Parker grounded.
After Captain America: Civil War, fans were formally introduced to Tom Holland’s web-slinger in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which doubled as a teen coming-of-age film.

In Holland’s first solo Spider-Man film, he faced off against Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes, who just so happened to also be the father of his homecoming date.
While Vulture is not the biggest star in Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery, Keaton’s performance perfectly walked the line between villain and everyman.

In the end, it was Homecoming‘s villain who made the film so memorable.

During a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed that he turned down the role of Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
“It was Vulture,” Miranda revealed. “I would have been so miscast.”

According to Miranda, he was offered the opportunity to play Vulture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but ultimately turned it down.
“I said, ‘When does it shoot?’” he recalled. “And [Kevin Feige] goes, ‘Basically the moment you step off-stage in Hamilton.’ And I went, ‘Well, I love these movies, but I would really like to stay married. So I cannot do this.’”
Eventually, the role went to Keaton.

Lin-Manuel Miranda appears in Hamilton’s opening night at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City, in August 20
“Michael Keaton was perfect. They found exactly who they needed,” Miranda said. “I have no regrets. I needed a vacation so badly. And I think I would’ve been deeply miscast in it.”
A Lasting Impact
While Miranda has yet to make his MCU debut in any capacity, he did play a small role in Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s biggest twist.

“Kevin Feige told me the entire plot over the phone. And I was like, ‘Ohh!’ And they get to the door and it’s her dad, and I went, ‘Ohhh!’ on the phone,” he remembered. “Kevin does say, ‘When I told you that over the phone, that’s when I knew the movie was gonna work, because of your reaction.’ So that’s my little footnote in history, was me going, ‘Ohhh!’”
